Project Scope

Axis was hired to lead the HVAC and plumbing design efforts for a large auditorium project at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. The scope of work consisted of HVAC and plumbing design for an 11,200 SF auditorium/lobby expansion and renovation of the existing two-story, 18,000 SF building originally constructed in 1964 to house the University’s Music and Arts Department.

The project was unusually complex in that the existing first-floor level of the existing building had 9’ clear to the second-floor framing making it a challenge to install traditional duct runs. Additionally, all the offices, classrooms, and recording studio space had to meet strict acoustical parameters which eliminated many conventional HVAC systems from being used. To achieve the results that the client wanted we had to use various systems for different spaces including packaged rooftop units, split systems, ERVs, DOAS units, and ductless split systems.
